900 Numbers

Background:

Many companies and organizations provide information about their products or services, take orders, or offer advice or educational messages via 900 long-distance service. Most businesses charge customers who use their 900 number lines. Federal rules require providers of 900 service to protect consumers by preceding the billable part of the call with a statement, or preamble, explaining:

  1. The per-minute cost of the call or the flat rate, if it will exceed $2.00. The name of the information provider and a description of the information or service to be provided must be clearly indicated.

  2. The exact point when billing will begin (for example, a beep or tone might show when the charges start for the call). The program must allow you to disconnect before that point without charge.

  3. If the program is directed toward minors, it must warn them that they must obtain parental permission to complete the call.

How to Further Protect Your Home:

900 Number Block

Sunflower Broadband automatically blocks 900 calls from being made on our network. This is a safety measure to protect you and your family from accidentally incurring large charges on your monthly invoice. If you need to access a 900 number, please contact our office and we will remove the 900 Number Block.

International Call Block

As more and more consumers have protected their homes with 900 block services, some companies have expanded access to their calling services by enticing consumers with direct-dialed international numbers. 900 block services will not stop direct-dialed international calls.

Consumers -- particularly parents of teens -- are encouraged to consider having an international call block placed on their long-distance account if they don't routinely make international calls. Sunflower Broadband's International Call Blocker will prohibit all international calls from being made from your home phone. Please note, that International Call Blocker will only block calls that require a country code to complete the call. It will not block calls to Canada or the Caribbean.
